Alright, let’s crank this up a notch
… and dive into the gutsy tale of the middle finger, the salute that Ted Nugent may not have invented but he sure as hell practised to perfection. You see, this audacious little gesture is almost the electric guitar solo of hand signals; timeless, bold & unapologetically rock ‘n’ roll.
Way back before any of us were a twinkle in our daddy’s eye, the Greeks kicked off this irreverent tradition, calling it the “digitus impudicus”; sounds classy, right? But it means nothing fancier than the “impudent finger.”
Those ancient Romans, not to be outdone in the badassery department, picked it up & ran with it, sticking it to their foes as a crude insult that’d make their mama blush if they had any shame to start with.
Fast forward a few centuries
… through medieval dust-ups & aristocratic snubs, this finger-flipping defiance sailed across the ocean & planted itself in the good ol’ U.S. of A. From Civil War battlefields to the rock arenas, it’s been a symbol for the wild, the restless, and the fiercely independent.
As for Ted – he waved that flag high & proud
… not just because it feels damn good, but because it speaks louder than words ever could – a one-fingered anthem of freedom & rebellion. He did recently decide to tone it down somewhat; took him nearly 70 years though.
Anyway, the next time you feel the urge to let that middle flag fly, remember, you’re partaking in a grand old tradition – flipping the bird. Now that can mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
