The Clash kicked off in the roaring ‘70s, determined to shake up the world with punk music that made waves with “London Calling” & tunes like ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ and ‘Rock the Casbah’. Joe considered their music ‘modern’, rather than punk. It was certainly the music of the time. An impeccable marriage! It was about smashing the status quo, speaking truths others wouldn’t touch & cranking up the volume on issues that mattered.
So much mattered to Joe Strummer, so when he said ‘the future is unwritten,’ he meant just that – but much more!
Nothing’s set in stone until it has come to past
At least that’s how it appears to me. Everyone of us holds the pen to write tomorrow’s story, and until then – it’s unwritten!
A thought-provoking dialogue took place with some friends as we proceeded to thoroughly dissect it? If Strummer meant to emphasise that this means championing the concept of freedom, asserting that every individual holds the potential to influence their future, despite varying societal constraints, what are we doing about it?
The discussion explored how individuals perceive their ability to effect change within the confines of their circumstances.
When you think about it, the majority ‘don’t even think about it’!
Strummer might have argued that while disparities in starting points are unavoidable, the essence of the phrase encourages a belief in personal & collective action; it suggests that history is not just a set of given outcomes but a dynamic narrative shaped by human actions, both singular & communal. Then it got deeper …
Critically, the conversation shifted to address the feasibility of such an ideology against the backdrop of today’s entrenched social & economic inequalities. The idealistic nature of the idea was acknowledged but implementing its practical necessity was the codundrum.
What highlighted the important collective action & social movements, was referenced back to historical catalysts & how they triggered significant societal transformations.
Catalysts – we need them now more than ever!
Ultimately, Strummer framed “The future is unwritten” as not only a mantra but also a universal call to action. I see it as a motivational rally cry to ignite a proactive engagement with the world, urging individuals to “take up the pen” in a literal & figurative sense.
Then assemble it – written as future – because it can come to be!
For that we need to know what we want!
The clear wake-up call electrifies the air with one solid truth. Band together for change & turn the world around. Change direction. The man laid it out straight, ditch the old “it’s just the way it is” attitude shackled by dusty traditions & iron-clad power systems.
Why settle for a future carved by someone else’s fears or greedy goals?
No way, me thinks! Time to change the tune of our life concert. Shake up the status quo. Break the moulds that hold us, paint a future that sings our tune – loud & clear. One that reflects our aspirations & wildest dreams. They have to be known to be released as a collective effort! Know what you want – declare it & determine the best way to go for it – usually by joining others who want the same thing!
This isn’t a sit-back-and-watch kind of deal.
It’s a roll-up-your-sleeves and dive-right-in adventure. Tough? Sure. But isn’t crafting a world that truly aligns our spirit for the changes ahead – important to you?
